Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to contest specific decisions made by the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
